Ogbonnaya Bassey, developer of BatteryWiz

About BatteryWiz

Hi, my name is Ogbonnaya Bassey, and I'm the developer of BatteryWiz.

BatteryWiz started as a personal project after I installed a home battery and solar PV system to reduce our electricity bills. Like many people, I wanted a simple way to automatically control when the battery charges and discharges - especially with changing tariffs and solar forecasts.

After searching for existing solutions, I couldn't find an app that worked well with my FoxESS inverter, so I decided to build one myself.

The first version was a prototype running on a Raspberry Pi. It performed regular optimisation calculations and sent commands directly to my inverter. What stood out immediately was how well it worked - the system continuously adapted to changing load and solar forecasts and produced highly efficient charging and discharging schedules.

That experience made me realise this shouldn't be something I keep to myself.

BatteryWiz is the result of taking that prototype and turning it into a simple, cross-platform app, now available on Windows and Android, with iOS and macOS planned.

While the current version supports FoxESS, the optimisation engine is designed to be vendor-agnostic, and I'm actively working to expand support to other inverter systems.

If you have a different inverter and would like to help test BatteryWiz, I'd love to hear from you. Early testers will receive free lifetime access as a thank you.

About Me

I was born and raised in Nigeria, later moved to the United States for graduate school, and eventually settled in the UK.

From a young age, I was fascinated by electricity and electronic devices - often taking things apart just to understand how they worked (and sometimes not quite putting them back together again).

That curiosity led me to study electrical engineering. I graduated with first-class honours from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Electric Power Systems) from Texas A&M University.

Since then, my work has been at the intersection of software and electric power systems, developing solutions for real-world energy challenges.

BatteryWiz brings together those two areas - software and power systems - in a practical way that helps people make better use of their energy.
